2007 was a big year for reunion bands. The Police, Van Halen, The Verve, Jesus & Mary Chain, Crowded House, The Sex Pistols, and Rage Against The Machine all re-united to make music this year.
But according to a recent public opinion poll on Vizu's research network of entertainment oriented websites, the really big reunion bands this year were tow U.K. bands from opposite ends of the mainstream music spectrum.
The all female pop music band, The Spice Girls, was formulated in the mid-1990s by Chris and Bob Herbert to compete with popular boy bands of the time. Given its target audience of young girls, the band went on to become heavily merchandised. The Spice Girls, Victoria Adams Beckham (Posh Spice), Melanie Brown (Scary Spice), Melanie Chishom (Sporty Spice), Geri Halliwell (Sexy or Ginger Spice), and Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), where as known for their cute monikers, dance routines, sexy outfits, and tabloid coverage as they were for their music. Though never formally disbanded, The Spice Girls, run ended in 2000 after about sex years in the limelight.
By contrast, the all male metal band Led Zeppelin, had a legendary 12 year run from 1968 when they came together as the Yard Birds to 1980 when John Bonham's death led to the band's break up. However, in the 27 years since the early heavy metal band's dissolution, Led Zeppelin's music has continued to sell well and the remaining members of the band, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones, all continued to have successful, if not legendary musical careers. Led Zeppelin has sold more than 300 million copies of their albums world wide and was selected as VH1's #1 on its list of Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.
